Christmas Pike Fish-In

We held our second Pike fish-in on the Old River in Irlam on the 28th Dec.

A heavy overnight frost saw a sheet of ice covering half of the lake, so the lure anglers took over the ice free end of the lake, and the dead bait anglers had to smash their own holes in the ice. Brrrrrr

It was cold work, but a steady supply of hot tea and hard liquor kept us all warm.

Despite the less than ideal fishing conditions – the day turned into a great social success – allowing anglers to meet up with old friends and make new ones. Lots of stories – some true, some tall we swapped and as the sun broke through, and the pub opened its doors – we al drifted away to a more comfortable environment.

On the fishing side of things, only 4 fish were caught all day. 3 to lures, 1 to the fly but none to the dead baits. This didnt compare favourably to our previous event when 19 fish were caught by 13 anglers- however most of these fish fell to live baits, and came from the area of lake which was thick with ice on our second visit.

The concept of a fish-in. A free event, just turn up and do your own thing seems to work really well.

So you will be glad to know that we have decided to hold more in the future
